Welcome to Primary 1/2!

Welcome to Primary 1/2!

We would like to give you a brief overview of our learning this term.

This is what we will be learning in Term 1.

Literacy - P1

This term we will begin to recognise, form and say commonly used sounds.  We will learn the letter name,
the sound it makes and to identify the lower and upper case shape.
Once we have learned our first few sounds, we will apply this knowledge to help us read some exciting new stories.
We will also learn to read some common words which will help us with reading and writing.
Word games, puzzles, flashcards and word boxes will help reinforce this new vocabulary.
Following the initial teaching of phonics and reading, children will be involved in both written work and practical
activities, often working collaboratively, in pairs or small groups.
We will also enjoy whole class Big Book reading lessons.

Our imaginative and functional writing this term will be:

  • Working on sequence and structure using First, Next, Then, Last.
  • Developing a story with Who?, What?, Why?
  • Giving a simple explanation for why something is as it is.

Literacy - P2

We will learn how to use more complex sounds e.g. a-e, eigh, ay to help us decode tricky words. We will expand
our use of Reading Tools to help us tackle increasingly complex texts and also add expression when reading
out loud. Comprehension tasks will be carried out in small groups, pairs and individually and will vary with some
discussion tasks.  We will use Big Book lessons to reinforce Reading Tools and to help us to become better writers.

Our writing this term will be:

  • Consolidating simple sentence structure e.g. using capital letters, finger spaces and full stops.
  • Working on sequence using First, Next, Then, Finally and adding detail to writing.
  • Developing a story with Who?, What?, Why?, and When?
  • Looking at Fantasy Stories and attempting our own.
  • Writing letters and reports in connection with our topics.

Numeracy and Maths - P1

We will be learning to copy, continue and describe simple patterns. We will also create our own patterns.

We will learn to:

  • Count 0 to 10 and 10 to 0.
  • Recognise symbols for numbers to 10.
  • Recognise number names to 10.
  • Match symbol with quantity to 10.
  • Sequence number symbols to 10.
  • Identify number before and number after to 10.
  • Understand and use the terms First, Second and Third.
  • Count 0 to 20 and 20 to 0.
  • Add within 5.
  • Recognise and name 1p, 2p, 5p and 10p coins.

  • Classify 2D shape be simple properties and sort, recognise and name squares, rectangles, triangles
    and circles.
  • Identify and name 3D shapes - cubes, cuboids, cones, cylinders and spheres.

  • Use and understand the vocabulary - day, night, morning, afternoon, before, after.
  • Use and understand days of the week in the appropriate sequence.

Numeracy and Maths - P2

In Primary 2 we will be using a programme called Heinemann Active Maths, which follows an active
approach to maths teaching and learning to really engage the children. During maths lessons, alongside
traditional teaching methods, the children will use a variety of resources and games to develop and
consolidate their understanding of maths concepts.

Over the course of the first term the children will be learning about the following concepts:

  • Count on and back in a sequence to 100 in a variety of ways.
  • Recognise, write and order numbers to 100 and match to quantities.
  • Position numbers to 100, discuss the digits using tens and units and know their value.
  • Add and subtract within 20.
  • Understand how money is used in everyday life.
  • Understand and order days, week and seasons.
  • Sort, recognise and name 2D and 3D shapes inc. hexagon and pyramid.
  • Sort 3D shapes by properties - corners, faces and edges.
  • Recognise, make and continue symmetrical patterns.

Most of the above work will be carried out using mental maths strategies and practical activities.
The children will often work together in pairs or small groups.

Social Studies

Our topics this Term are:

  • Rights Respecting School
  • The Cafe

Our Social Studies topic is The Cafe. The children have asked to learn about the different jobs in a cafe,
how cafes come up with their menus, where the food comes from, how to keep a cafe healthy and clean,
what prices to charge customers, types of equipment used in cafes and how to let people know you have
a cafe. As you can see, we are going to be very busy! We now need to do our research. The children have
suggested writing letters, interviewing cafe workers, visiting cafes, using the internet and setting up a
role-play cafe to help us answer our questions.

In Health we are learning to use our Class Charter to help make our class a safe and happy place to work.
We will be learning about careful hand washing, road safety, internet safety and stranger danger throughout
the term.

In Science this term, we will be learning about Day and Night. We will learn about why we have day and
night and consider the impact of light and dark on our lives and the lives of animals.

Our RME focus will be on Influential People and we will also learn about Harvest and Christmas.

Our P.E. focus areas are Fitness, Ball Skills and Dance.  P.E. days are Tuesdays and Fridays.
P1 have S.F.A. coaching on Thursdays too.

Our Expressive Arts skills will be developed through our topic work with a focus on collage and drawing
in Art, rhythm and performance in Music and adopting a role in Drama.
