What are we doing in Term 1?

What are we doing in Term 1?

In Literacy this term we will be looking at ‘Reading into Writing’ skills, where we analyse the things a good author does to improve their writing such as developing characters, plotting a story and the use of techniques like alliteration and onomatopoeia etc.

We will be developing our reading comprehension and talking and listening skills through the use of our new interactive reading scheme, Bug Club.

In writing we are focusing on the use of descriptive language and using interesting Vocabulary, Connectives, Openers and Punctuation (VCOP) to up level and develop our writing skills.

We will also have regular grammar and handwriting lessons.

Our numeracy focus this term will be on the number system and place value, looking at factors and multiples. We will also continue to improve our mental maths skills with regular activities where we discuss useful strategies.  In our ‘Beyond Number’ work, we will be developing our learning about time and money.

Health and Wellbeing

We will be starting the year with BBBL and RRS – Better Behaviour Better Learning and Rights Respecting Schools. Based on the UNCRC, we will be revisiting the articles and looking at the rights of the child. We will be learning about human rights and using them to create a class charter. This topic will also focus on text, internet and fire safety and appropriate behaviours that should displayed in school, as well as refreshing our life saving and first aid skills with the Heartstart program.

In PE we will have a focus on fitness, ball skills and dance.

Our mental and emotional wellbeing – we will be looking at friendships, relationships and managing conflict. This will be supported by input from the PATHS programme

Science and Technology

We will be learning about Renewable Energy with Dr Brew from Douglas Academy. We will also have input in computing science from Mr Baker where we will be looking at building our own websites.

Social Studies

‘The Scottish Parliament’ is our Social Studies topic this term and we are looking forward to finding out how people are elected and decisions are made, whilst learning more about the political parties represented in the parliament.

This term we will focus on drawing – we have already completed some fantastic self portraits in charcoal.

We will be looking at the power of influence and influential people. We will be presenting PowerPoints to show the influence our heroes have on us.
