We received accreditation for our Sun Safe Award in 2022. Accreditation means we ensure children are able to enjoy the sun safely. This is imbedded into staff practice by checking the UV level and temperature reading from the Met Office every day, to ensure it is safe for children to play outdoors. After researching the information, staff then put appropriate measures into place to keep the children safe while playing and learning in the sun. Measures include:

• Providing shaded areas
• Having a hydration station
• Appropriate clothing to protect from the sun
• Sun cream application throughout the day

Parents and carers should bring their child in wearing appropriate clothing and have the first application of sun cream on, which the staff will top up throughout the day. A sun hat is provided when each child starts in the centre that has neck protection. The children in the centre are aware of the dangers of the sun and sing the “Slip, slap slop” song to help remind everyone of what to do when it is sunny.
