The PTA is an organisation of parents and staff which exists to encourage closer links between home and school. PTAs are best known for their fundraising work, but we have a useful social function too in that we arrange social events for pupils, parents and staff to get together.

We hold our annual general meeting in September, at the start of the school year. At this meeting a committee is elected to run the PTA – usually consisting of a chair, a vice-chair, a treasurer, a secretary and ordinary committee members. We try to include at least one parent from each class to pass on information from the PTA to other parents in their child’s class. The committee meets once a term and sets up smaller working groups to organise individual events.

We raise money through events. Currently we run a Christmas fair, a Halloween disco, 2 film nights, a family ceilidh and a Leavers’ Disco. Other PTA activities include school uniform sales and a coffee and bakery stall at Sports day. We are always looking for new fundraising ideas and more people to help out.

Funds raised by the PTA are intended to provide ‘extras’ not already provided by the school's main income – often fun things that make learning more interesting and exciting although with the school budget being squeezed, funds are also now being applied to items like interactive white boards and ipads for everyday use in the classroom The PTA committee and the headteacher decide how to spend PTA funds. Recent items funded by the PTA include ipads, playground equipment, school pantomime costs, science experts being brought into the school, Leavers’ hoodie costs and School Values Awards.

There are many different ways you can help with the PTA, whether you have lots of time to offer or not. Some of the roles are time-consuming, although also rewarding. If you can’t commit to a big job, look out for things you can do less frequently (eg running a stall at the summer fair, baking for a cake sale). And you can always support PTA events by simply turning up. We are a sociable group and have great fun at our meetings and events. Come and join us.
